Build the skatepark by writing functions.

Lines are rails. Parabolas are halfpipes. Exponentials are rocket ramps. When your math is off, you eat pavement, and the game tells you exactly why.

Function Riders is a free, open Algebra 1 game: Seriously Open Games #01. It runs right here in the browser, including on school Chromebooks. No accounts, no tracking, nothing to install.

The Lesson Ladder (v0.2.5)

  • Graph Paper: across first, then up. Your first points and your first rail.
  • Steepness: rise over run, downhill slopes, same slope anywhere on a rail.
  • The Formula Machine: slide x and watch y recalculate forever. Then an exponent. Plot it yourself, then write it.
  • Chunks: every 5 units the park gets a fresh (0, 0). Write one chunk, then string 2 to 5 together through the stars.
  • Steps and Drops: meet b. Minus b is a drop the rider jumps.
  • Off the Training Wheels: one big grid, y = m(x - h) + k, like the pros.

Plus the Ride Lab (type ramps, drop in, land within 25 degrees or bail) and a Graph Sandbox with live form badges.

For teachers

  • Friendly one-sentence feedback for the classic mistakes: swapped coordinates, run over rise, a downhill rail with a positive slope.
  • Three hint tiers, "Show me" after three misses, and stars for first tries. Nothing is locked behind accuracy.
  • Full keyboard play, read-aloud on every prompt, and color is never the only signal.
  • Lessons are tagged to the Washington State 2026 math standards (Algebra 1 and grade 8).
